Cobleskill, NY – The Castleton State College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from SUNY-Cobleskill, taking the opener 14-2 in five innings, and shutting out the Tigers 9-0 in the six-inning night cap.
GAME ONE: Hilary Bemis (Crown Point, NY) tossed a complete-game, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out six. Megan Blongy (Rutland, VT) continued her torrid play at the plate, driving in four runs on two hits to lead the offense.
Castleton exercised its plate discipline, drawing 17 walks in the opener. Bemis also went 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs, while Mercedes Maltbie (Warrensburg, NY) also had one hit and two RBI.
Each Spartan in the lineup, with the exception of Blongy and Bemis scored at least one run, led by three apiece from Caylee Fleury (Barre, VT) and Sarah Flore (Springfield, VT).
GAME TWO: Emily Sweeney (Weare, NH) pitched six innings of shut-out ball, and Castleton pounded out 13 hits en route to the mercy-rule shortened win. Sweeney allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five in earning the shutout.
Bemis provided the big blow for Castleton, a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning that broke the game open.
Hannah Greene (Rutland, VT) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the top of the lineup, while Birdget Dusha (Greenwich, NY) added a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, VT) and Shannon Jipner (Bristol, VT) each had two hits and a double. Chipman scored a run and drove in another, and Abby Sullivan (Weare, NH) scored two and drove in one to go along with her 1-for-3 performance.
Castleton's string of four doubleheaders in four days continues Friday when the Spartans play host to RPI at 3:00. The Spartans will then open its North Atlantic Conference schedule this Saturday and Sunday when they host Thomas (2 pm) and Farmington (12 pm) respectively.
