Castleton sweeps conference doubleheader from Lyndon State

Lyndonville, VT - The Castleton State College softball team has now won five of its last six games after sweeping a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Lyndon State College 14-2, and 5-4 Wednesday evening at Skip Pound Field.

Castleton (12-13, 4-2 NAC) pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of five Hornet errors in game one, and scored the game-winner in the seventh inning of game two to earn the 5-4 win.

GAME ONE: After a scoreless first inning, Castleton plated three in the second and five in the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Mercedes Maltbie (Warrensburg, NY) provided and RBI-ground-out and Caylee Fleury (Barre, VT) smacked a run-scoring single in the second inning.

In the second, Hilary Bemis (Crown Point, NY) singled and scored, Steph Wright (Guilford, VT) provided an RBI-single and Maltbie drove in her second run of the day with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Lyndon State grabbed a run back in the bottom of the third, as Kathy Kline (Coventry, RI) smacked an rbi-triple that scored Michelle Wilcox (Sheldon, VT) who reached on a fielder's choice. The Hornets struck for one more in the fourth on a Katelyn Willey (Lancaster, NH) single.

The Spartans put the game away in the sixth, scoring six runs on seven hits. The rally was started by Megan Blongy (Rutland, VT) who singled and came around to score on an Abbey Hewes (Salt Lake City, UT) single. Wright provided a two-run single later in the inning, and Maltbie drove in her third and fourth runs of the game with a double.

Bemis picked up the win, going the distance, allowing two earned on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Every Spartan in the lineup collected at least one hit, and all but two scored. Hannah Greene (Rutland, VT) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Fleury, Blongy and Wright each had two hits. Sarah Flore (Springfield, VT) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one RBI.

GAME TWO: Castleton struggled to just four hits in the contest, and gave up three unearned runs on five errors, but was able to manufacture a run when the needed it most. Hilary Bemis led off the top of the seventh, working a walk. Bemis then stole second and third, and was driven in by a sacrifice fly to right field by Julie Benzenberg (Pine Bush, NY).

Castleton took a 2-1 lead after the second inning, as Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, VT) led off with a double and came around to score on a Rachael Dube (Newbury, VT) RBI-single. Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, VT) who walked earlier in the inning, scored on an error for the second run.

The Hornets took advantage of a costly error for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 3-2 lead. Lyndon State made it 4-2, with another unearned run in the fourth inning before Castleton answered with two unearned runs in the fifth to tie it at 4-4.

Freshman Kristy Jurczak (Oxford, ME) started, but did not factor into the decision lasting four innings in the Spartan pitching circle. Jurczak allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Bemis came on to pitch the final three innings, earning the win in relief, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Bemis also went 1-for-3 at the dish, scoring twice for the Spartans.
