Waterville, ME - The Castleton State College softball team was swept by Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Spartans fell 4-2 in the opener, and could not hang on to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap, losing 5-4.
Game One: Kristy Clements smacked a two-run homerun in the first inning to stake Thomas to a 2-0 lead early on. The Terriers plated two more in the second on back-to-back singles by Brittany Morin and Malorie Blakney, coupled with a costly Spartan error.
Castleton scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings as Hilary Bemis blasted a solo homerun to put the Spartans on the board in the fourth. Alicia Zraunig singled, stole second and later came around to score on a wild pitch in the sixth to cut the lead in half. Castleton had two on in the seventh, but could not push either across.
Jordan Kennedy struck out 14 and did not walk a batter in the win for Thomas.
Game Two: Castleton broke out for three runs in the first inning, grabbing the early lead. Zraunig was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a Bemis single and came around to score on a Shannon Jipner sacrifice fly. Julie Benzenberg singled, putting runners on first and third. Castleton then executed the double-steal to perfection, with Benzenberg taking second and Bemis racing home to score the second Spartan run. Sarah Flore plated the final Castleton run of the inning on a double that scored Benzenberg.
Castleton tacked on another run in the second as Zraunig doubled and later scored on a Jipner ground out.
After scoring an unearned run in the third inning, Thomas erupted for four runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Blakney provided the big hit, a bases-loaded double that plated a pair.
