Castleton sweeps Lyndon State

Castleton, VT – Hilary Bemis collected five hits and eight rbi and tossed a no-hitter in the second game as Castleton swept Lyndon State 6-1 and 15-0 in five innings in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon.

Game One: Castleton plated five runs on five hits in the first inning as Sarah Flore and Amanda Gerstenmaier each stroked two-run singles to lead the rally. Castleton starting pitcher, Tosha Whittemore took care of the rest, tossing all seven innings and allowing just on unearned run on four hits while striking one and walking one.

The Spartans struck for 10 hits off Lyndon State starter Sara Fetterhoff, en route to six runs (four unearned). Fetterhoff walked five and struck out two in the loss. Bemis had two hits and scored one run in the opener, and Gerstenmaier also had a pair of hits.

Game Two: Bemis did most of her damage in the nightcap, connecting on a three-run homerun in the first and a grand slam in Castleton's nine-run fourth inning to break the game open. The junior also threw a complete-game no-hitter, striking out five and walking three. Freshman shortstop, Lydia McPherson, smacked a pair of doubles and a single, drove in four runs and scored two aid the offensive onslaught. Catcher Stephanie Wright had a pair of hits and scored two runs as Castleton improves to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Lyndon State falls to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon with 1:00 pm NAC doubleheaders. Castleton will host Johnson State, while Lyndon State is at Green Mountain.
