Throggs Neck, NY – The Castleton State College football team dropped a Eastern Collegiate Football Conference game to host SUNY-Maritime 58-20 Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Privateers improve to 4-2 overall on the season (1-1 ECFC), while the Spartans fall to 1-4 (0-3 ECFC). Maritime out-gained Castleton, 605-355, on offense on the day.
Last week's ECFC Rookie of the Week, freshman Travis Scott-RB (Pace, Fla./Pace) led the all players with 149 rushing yards and tallied a career- and game-high three touchdowns. Junior John Gagliano-RB (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored two rushing touchdowns on 53 yards running, while sophomore Jamie Spanopoulos-FB (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) amassed a total of 116 yards (81 rushing and 35 receiving) and scored once on the ground and once on a pass.
Sophomore Anthony Gagliano-QB (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was 4-for-6 on completions for 143 passing yards, with one pass TD, and added 76 yards on the ground for the Privateers. Maritime also got scores from sophomore Madison Leary-K/WR (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) on a 25-yard field goal and a late rushing touchdown by Joe Salthouse-QB (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy).
On defense, the Privateers were led by two-time ECFC Defensive Player of the Week Keith Barnes-LB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) who registered a game-high 10 total tackles (nine solo and two assisted), including 2.5 for a loss of 33 yards. Barnes also recorded his first interception of the season in the third quarter, while junior Steve Roman-DB (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) also had a third quarter interception of his own as well as a fumble recovery and a breakup of a pass.
John Gagliano's scored on Maritime's first possession of the game on a 4-yard run. The Privateers then recovered a Spartan fumble on the kickoff and Gagliano added ran in his second TD, this one from three yards out, just 2:19 later to put the Privateers up, 13-0. Castleton responded with a touchdown to make the 13-7 with 4:58 left in the first.
Maritime would waste no time responding, as Scott rushed 69 yards to the house on the first play from scrimmage on the next drive. The freshman would punch another TD in, this one from 18 yards out, before time expired on the first quarter to give the Privateers a 27-7 lead. Leary added his 25-yard field goal at 5:02 of the second quarter, before Spanopoulos put Maritime up, 37-7, on a 1-yard run to round out the scoring in the first half. With 5:29 remaining in the third, Madison Leary had the crowd's attention when he attempted a 54-yard field goal. The kick, with help from a strong wind, reached the uprights and deflected into the air after hitting the crossbar. The ball would land just short of passing through the uprights for three, entertaining, yet disappointing, the over 3,000 in attendance who had hoped it was good.
In the third quarter, Spanopoulos caught an Anthony Gagliano pass and ran it in for a 35-yard pass TD, his second touchdown of the day, which set a new modern-day program single-season record for touchdowns with a total of 13. Castleton would quickly respond with an 85-yard pass on its first play from scrimmage to cut the Maritime lead to 44-13.
Scott added his third TD on a 4-yard run to start the fourth quarter, and then Salthouse had a 9-yard run to round out the scoring for the Privateers. The Spartans added a late 28-yard pass TD before time expired.
Castleton returns to action next Saturday when the Spartans travel to Anna Maria College for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
