Castleton loses to Western New England in opening round of ECAC Championship

Castleton, VT-The sixth-seeded Castleton State College women's lacrosse team fell 22-4 to third-seed, Western New England College in the opening round of the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Championship.

The Golden Bears, who improved to 15-5 with the win, opened the game on an 8-0 run through the first 9:10 of play. The run was keyed by Jeanmarie Barbato's four goals, and Jillian Caracciolo's three goals and two assists.

Castleton broke through with 17:23 remaining as Marie VanDerKar scored. WNEC answered by scoring six of the final seven goals of the half to take a 14-2 lead into halftime.

The two teams traded goals to open the second half, but the Golden Bears ended the game on a 6-0 run and earned a spot in the semifinal round.

Lindsey Fenton scored a game-high six goals and had one assist, while Caracciolo finished with four goals and five assists. Barbato ended the day with four goals and two assists and Kayte Devine added three goals and two assists.

Adams led the Spartans with a pair of goals, while VanDerKar added one goal and one assist. Stephanie Pearce added the final Castleton goal.

Castleton goalie, Meredith Pope stopped five first-half shots in the loss, before giving way to Francesca Mazzola who stopped seven in the second half.

Marissa Bonitatibus picked up the win for Western New England, stopping four first-half shots. Erin Doherty recorded one second half save.

Castleton's season ends at 10-8, setting a program record for wins in a season.

Western New England will travel to top-seed Bridgewater State for a 3:00 pm semifinal game against the winner of a quarterfinal match-up between #2 Roger Williams and #7 Worcester State.
