CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's lacrosse team fell in a Little East Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, dropping a 19-9 decision to the University of Southern Maine at Dave Wolk Stadium.

How It Happened
Southern Maine came out firing, scoring five straight goals to open the contest before
Gianna Geraci responded with back-to-back tallies for Castleton to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Brianna Paul and
Renny Cota each added a goal in the first half, but the Huskies continued to pull away with nine goals in the opening quarter and four more in the second to take a 13-4 halftime lead.
The Spartans found more success in the second half, with
Megan Ward and Paul each scoring in the third quarter, followed by fourth-quarter goals with two from Cota and one from
Phoebe Loomis.
A late Ward goal was called back due to a crease violation, preventing the Spartans from hitting double digits in the scoring column. Despite the late push, USM held on for a 19-9 victory.

Katie Stager made eight saves in the loss.

The Spartans return home Monday, April 21, as they host the University of Maine-Farmington in a non-conference matchup. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
