Visiting Huskies Take Down Women's Lacrosse

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's lacrosse team fell in a Little East Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, dropping a 19-9 decision to the University of Southern Maine at Dave Wolk Stadium.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Southern Maine 19, VTSU Castleton 9
  • Location: Dave Wolk Stadium – Castleton, Vt.
  • Records: Southern Maine 10-5 (4-2 LEC) | Castleton 4-11 (2-5 LEC)

How It Happened
Southern Maine came out firing, scoring five straight goals to open the contest before Gianna Geraci responded with back-to-back tallies for Castleton to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Brianna Paul and Renny Cota each added a goal in the first half, but the Huskies continued to pull away with nine goals in the opening quarter and four more in the second to take a 13-4 halftime lead.

The Spartans found more success in the second half, with Megan Ward and Paul each scoring in the third quarter, followed by fourth-quarter goals with two from Cota and one from Phoebe Loomis.

A late Ward goal was called back due to a crease violation, preventing the Spartans from hitting double digits in the scoring column. Despite the late push, USM held on for a 19-9 victory.

Keeper Katie Stager made eight saves in the loss.

What's Next
The Spartans return home Monday, April 21, as they host the University of Maine-Farmington in a non-conference matchup. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
