Castleton splits non-conference doubleheader at Lyndon State

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Lyndon State College, losing the first game 3-2 in nine innings, and winning the second 3-2.

Game One: Castleton got on the board first with an unearned run in the second inning. Rachel Hunt reached on an error with two outs, stole second and scored on another Hornet miscue for the early lead.

Lyndon State tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth as Angel Phelps tripled and scored on Mary Gagne's rbi-ground out.

Both teams pushed across one run in the eighth, but Lyndon State scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on an error to secure the win 3-2.

Laura Rogers allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five and walking none in 8 and two-thirds innings in the circle.

Ashlea Bourdon earned the win for Lyndon State, allowing two runs (zero earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Game Two: Laura Rogers scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the fifth inning to give Castleton the split. Rogers singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on an error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Allison Lamay's sacrifice fly.

Castleton plated two runs in the fourth inning as Lamay, Cassie Koehne and Tosha Whittemore each singled to load the bases. With the bases loaded Rachel Hunt deposited a two-out, two-run single to tie the score at 2-2.

Whittemore picked up the win, going the distance and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks, while striking out one.

Castleton now stands at 9-19 with six conference games over the next four days. The Spartans wrap up their home schedule with a NAC doubleheader versus Maine-Famrington at 3:00 pm on Thursday.
