Castleton sweeps North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Johnson State

Castleton, VT-Laura Emilo was 4-for-6 with two doubles as Castleton State College swept a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Johnson State 10-0 and 9-1 with both games shortened to five innings due to the mercy-rule.

Game One: Freshman, Tosha Whittemore pitched a complete-game shut-out, allowing three hits while striking out seven over five innings.

Castleton broke the game open with a six-run (two earned) second inning, as 11 Spartans came to the plate. Emilo led the offense with a single, double and one run scored. Sophomore Hilary Bemis connected for a two-run homerun in the three-run third inning to put the game out of reach.

Freshman, Siobhan Whittemore collected two hits, one rbi and one run scored while Laura Rogers also added a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Johnson State received hits from Miranda Robtoy, Kayla Golfin and Kathleen Garrity in the loss. Julie Gervais took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two.

Game Two: Castleton pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap, led by Emilo and Brandy White who each doubled, singled and drove in one run apiece. The Spartans once again put together a six-run inning, this time in the fourth, as 11 Spartans came to the plate.

Freshman Maggie Mercy picked up her first collegiate win, going all five innings, allowing one earned on six hits while striking out three.
