Poultney, VT-The Castleton State College softball team dropped a pair of North Atlantic Conference games to visiting Thomas College both by scores of 5-2.
Game One: Thomas scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, and one each in the second, third and fifth to take game one 5-2.
Starting pitcher Nicole Smith pitched the complete game, allowing two runs (one earned), and striking out seven in the win. Smith also helped her cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored in the win.
Castleton's Laura Rogers was 3-for-3 with a run scored, and Cassandra Koehne roped an rbi-triple to lead the Spartan offense.
Angie Carpenter went the distance in the loss, striking out four and allowing five runs (four earned)
Game Two: In the nightcap Castleton once again struggled to put the offense together as Smith went the distance in the win.
Jen Higgins went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to lead the 6-6 (4-0 NAC) Terriers. Trista Morin also had two hits including a triple and a double to go along with one rbi and one run scored.
Tosha Whittemore and Alicia Zraunig each had rbi-doubles as Castleton falls to 4-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Whittemore started and pitched all seven innings, striking out four while allowing five runs (three earned).
The Spartans are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Russell Sage in a non-conference double header.
