Castleton completes road trip with sweep of Bay Path, 5-4 and 6-0

Longmeadow, MA-The Castleton State College softball team has won seven out of their last eight games after sweeping a NAC doubleheader from Bay Path College 5-4 in eight innings and 6-0.

Castleton needed extra innings to dispatch the Wildcats 5-4 in the opener. Meg Robitaille tossed all eight innings, striking out 10 and allowing seven hits.

After giving up a lead-off homerun, Robitaille settled down and did not allow a run until the fifth inning after the Spartans had staked a 4-1 lead.

Bay Path tied the game in the fifth, sending it to extra innings tied at four.

The extra inning mandates the final batter of the previous inning be placed on second base to start the extra frame. Laura Rogers wsa placed on second, sacrificed to third by Alicia Zraunig and singled home by Rachel Hunt.

In the bottom of the eighth, after a fly-out to left field, The Wildcats singled to put runners at the corners with one out. On the ensuing fly-out to Carley Amedore, Sarah Wright tried to tag and score from third but she was gunned down at home plate by the senior centerfielder to end the game.

Hunt had three RBI in the game on a pair of hits. Zraunig also had two hits to go along with her sacrifice and one run scored. Rachel Dunn had one hit and two RBI for the streaking Spartans.

In the nightcap, Laura Rogers was once again lights-out on the mound. The junior righty tossed the complete-game shut-out, striking out eight and allowing six hits.

Rogers was also 2 for 5 at the plate with one run scored. Rachel Hunt had three more hits, one RBI and one run scored, while Alicia Zraunig added a pair of hits, one RBI and two runs scored.

Castleton improves to 9-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to NAC foe, Johnson State for a 3:30 doubleheader.
