Rensselaer, NY-The Castleton State College softball team was able to finally get their season underway as they traveled to RPI for a doubleheader. Castleton could not match the 10-3 Red Hawks, as the Spartans fell 5-0 and 10-2 in five innings.

In the opener, RPI pitcher Michelle Street struck out the first 12 batters she faced en route to a school-record 17 strikeouts. Street went the distance allowing just one hit, that a 7th inning double to Laura Rogers.

Castleton received a solid outing from Meg Robitaille in the loss, tossing six innings and allowing four earned runs.

In the nightcap Castleton found themselves down after one inning 2-0. The Spartans would strike back in the third as Laura Rogers and Elizabeth Marion sandwiched a Hilary Bemis walk with a pair of singles to start the inning. Carley Amedore unloaded a bases-loaded double to drive in a pair of runs and tie the score.

Castleton's bats went silent from that point on and the Red Hawks struck for eight unanswered runs to put the game away in five innings.

Angie Carpenter took the loss for Castleton, while Michelle Bianchetti picked up her fifth win of the season for RPI.

Castleton falls to 0-2 on the young season and will travel to Johnson State on Tuesday for a 3:00 pm NAC doubleheader.
