Spartans Rally Late to Tie Norwich in Dramatic Fashion

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team battled intrastate rival Norwich to a 1-1 draw on Friday evening in a hard-fought contest.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 1-1 Tie
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. | Dave Wolk Stadium
  • Records: 0-1-1 Castleton | 1-0-1 Norwich

How it Happened:
Both teams traded opportunities early, with Castleton's defense playing a key role in keeping the Cadets contained.

The Spartans continued to create chances through strong runs along the sideline and quality balls from the back line. Wyatt Robbie delivered a good leading pass that nearly connected for Castleton, but the Spartans were unable to put a foot on it. Junior Carreira later had a good look after Jacob Eiseman played a strong ball up the wing to Jacques Alfani, but the attempt went just high and wide.

Norwich earned a free kick in a dangerous position following a Castleton foul, but Xander Berthiaume came up with a key save to keep the Cadets off the scoreboard.

Eleven minutes into the second half, the Cadets capitalized on a free kick following a Spartan foul to take a 1-0 lead.

As time began to run out, Castleton continued to search for the equalizer. The Spartans earned a corner kick with just 17 seconds remaining, with CJ Wallingford stepping up to take the kick. With just five seconds left on the clock, Joey Beggs connected with Wallingford's corner and headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

By the Numbers:
  • Berthiaume played all 90 minutes and finished with seven saves.
  • Beggs recorded two shots, including the game-tying goal, while Carreira also tallied two shots, with one on target.
  • Norwich held a 10-7 advantage in shots despite Castleton controlling the majority of possession.
What's Next
Castleton returns to action on Sept 6 where they will play SUNY Potsdam in a nonconference matchup at 4 p.m. at Dave Wolk Stadium.
