FARMINGTON, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the University of Maine-Farmington Sunday afternoon despite narrowly outshooting the Beavers 12-11.

How it Happened:
Castleton's defense broke up several Maine-Farmington offensive opportunities early, keeping the Beavers from finding a clear path to goal.
Farmington broke through in the 37
th minute after
Xander Berthiaume made the initial save before
Jacob Eiseman came up with a defensive save. The Beavers eventually found the back of the net on their third attempt to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans continued to look for an equalizer in the second half, with a throw in from
Charlie Bell finding
CJ Wallingford at the 31:03 mark. Wallingford's shot hit the crossbar and stayed out, with Castleton earning a corner kick on the play but unable to convert.
With about 10 minutes remaining, Castleton earned another opportunity following a foul by Maine-Farmington.
Jacques Alfani stepped up for the free kick, but his attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
Maine-Farmington added another goal late in the second half to extend its lead to 2-0.
The Spartans continued to pressure the Beavers late, outshooting them 9-3 in the second half, but Maine-Farmington held on for the 2-0 victory.
