CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team earned its first Little East Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, securing a 1-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth.

How it Happened:
Both teams traded possession through the opening 15 minutes before the Corsairs recorded the game's first shot. UMass Dartmouth continued to create opportunities throughout the first half peppering shots at
Xander Berthiaume, but he and the Spartans' back line kept the Corsairs off the board.
Nate Lurie put a pair of shots on net for Castleton, but neither found the back of the net as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Lurie broke through in the 57
th minute, sending a rocket into the back of they net off a feed from
Jacques Alfani to give Castleton a 1-0 lead.
Castleton's defense continued to hold strong through the second half, with Berthiaume and the back line keeping the Corsairs off the scoreboard. A late Spartan foul gave UMass Dartmouth a free kick opportunity by the 35 yard line, but Berthiaume came up with the save to preserve the lead.
Castleton held off the Corsairs through the final minutes, securing the 1-0 victory despite being outshot 19-7.
By the Numbers:
- Berthiaume made nine saves in 90 minutes, a season high, to earn the shutout.
- Lurie accounted for five of Castleton's seven shots.
- Lurie's game winning goal was his first of the season.
