WILMINGTON, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's alpine ski team placed 15th out of 27 teams on Day 2 of the USCSA National Championships at Whiteface Mountain.
The Spartans sat in fifth place after the morning run but dropped in the standings after three racers were unable to finish their second runs. For the second race in a row, Castleton recorded just two finishers in the slalom. First-run course conditions deteriorated early in the race, leading to numerous DNFs across the field, including several Spartans.
Sophomore Andrea Rodriguez delivered another standout performance, posting the sixth-fastest time in the first run before moving up one spot to finish fifth overall after the second run. The result earned Rodriguez First-Team USCSA All-American honors and marked the fourth All-American recognition of her collegiate career.
Freshman Eva Young followed up her giant slalom All-American performance earlier in the week with another strong result in the slalom. After sitting 23rd following the first run, Young surged up the leaderboard with the fastest second-run time of the day, climbing 10 spots to finish 13th overall and earn All-American honors. Combined with her ninth-place finish in the giant slalom, Young placed fifth overall in the combined standings at her first USCSA National Championships to earn First-Team USCSA All-American honors.
Regular-season MacConnell Division rival University of Connecticut captured the team title in the event, followed by Colgate University in second and Rocky Mountain College in third.
The Spartans will return to competition Saturday, March 14, for the dual slalom event to conclude the national championships.
