Spartans Open Season in Tough Battle with Chargers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's lacrosse team opened its season with a tough 20-3 loss to Colby-Sawyer College.

How it Happened
Colby-Sawyer won the opening draw and went on an 11-goal run spanning two quarters, starting a running clock heading into halftime. The Chargers scored seven goals in the first quarter and added four more in the second.

Castleton broke through early in the second half as Megan Culp recorded the squad's first goal of the season at the 11:32 mark to make it 11-1.

The visitors responded with back-to-back goals before Taylor Tallmadge added her name to the scoring column. Culp picked up the assist on the play to make it 13-2.

Colby-Sawyer tacked on seven more goals before time expired, while Castleton added one more tally from Phoebe Loomis on the man advantage. The visitors claimed the 20-3 victory.

By the Numbers
• Culp, a senior captain, led the offensive effort with two points on a goal and an assist. She also led the team with three caused turnovers, three draw controls, and four ground balls. She is one point away from 100 career points.
• Castleton went 1-for-1 on free position shots, with the goal scored by Culp.
• Appearing in her first collegiate contest, goalkeeper Samantha White made 11 saves.

The Spartans return to Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday, March 14 to host the Colonels of Curry College for a 12 p.m. draw.
