NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team dropped a tough matchup with in-state rival Norwich Sunday afternoon, 2-1.
The Basics:

How it Happened:
- Senior Tanner Curtis struck first to open up the rivalry match after a corner kick. Matt Spiller sent the ball in from outside the box, setting up a beautiful ball to Liam Cramer, who headed it back into play as he was moving out of bounds. Curtis was able to get his head on it and bounce it past the keeper in the 11th minute.
- The Spartans held on to a 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half despite the Cadets out shooting them 5-1.
- The Cadets saw a penalty kick opportunity come their way in the 62nd minute, but Xander Berthiaume was able to knock it down, keeping the Spartans ahead.
- Norwich was awarded another penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Berthiaume knocked down the initial kick, but Ben Rubenstein fired off another shot on the rebound to even up the game at one each.
- In the 68th minute, the Cadets capitalized on another penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead.
- The Spartan back line kept Norwich at bay for the last 20 minutes, defending five corner kick opportunities, but were not break through on the other end of the field.
By the Numbers:
- Castleton was out shot 17-3, 10-1 in shots on goal.
- Berthiaume made seven saves over 90 minutes.
