Men's Soccer Conquers Chargers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team delivered an impressive 4-1 win against Colby-Sawyer in front of the home crowd Friday evening.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 4-1 Castleton
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. – Dave Wolk Stadium

How it Happened:
  • The Spartans took control in the first half, stopping four corner kick opportunities by the Chargers before breaking through in the 30th minute.
  • Jacques Alfani sent a cross over to the opposite side of the box, finding the foot of Matt Spiller, sending the ball in to Michael O'Connor, who sent the ball in over his head to put Castleton up 1-0.
  • The Chargers wasted no time in the second half, scoring just one minute and 30 seconds in, tying the game at one each.
  • Following a Castleton offside call, the Spartans regained possession with a foul in the box, giving Sean Butler a penalty kick opportunity, which he converted to put the Spartans up 2-1 in the 49th minute.
  • In the 60th minute, Tanner Curtis knocked off the original shot, which rebounded off the keeper right back to Seth Dube, who snuck the ball in to extend the lead to two.
  • Castleton struck just three minutes later, with a corner kick put in by Spiller finding the head of Liam Cramer for the final Spartan goal of the day in the 63rd minute, solidifying the 4-1 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Xander Berthiaume made five saves through 90 minutes.
  • Cramer, Butler, Dube, and O'Connor notched one goal each.
  • Spiller led the Spartans with two assists, while Alfani and Curtis contributed one assist each.
What's Next
The squad continues its homestand on Monday, September 8, when they host Paul Smith's College (N.Y) with kick off set for 7 p.m.
