NEWTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's lacrosse team took down UMass Boston on the road Wednesday afternoon to record its second Little East Conference win of the season, 16-12.

How it Happened
The hosts were quick to take a 2-0 lead before goals by
Gianna Geraci and
Renny Cota knotted the game at 2-2 with 4:27 remaining in the opening quarter. Both teams recorded another tally to again see the game tied, this time 3-3 heading into the second quarter. It was Cota with her second score of the game, this time helped along by
Brianna Paul.
UMass Boston again owned the first two goals of the next stanza, ahead 5-3 with 11:30 on the clock. The Spartans went on an 8-0 tear to close out the half with an 11-5 advantage. Owning points was Paul and Geraci, each with two goals and an assist, while
Phoebe Loomis,
Megan Ward and
Taylor Tallmadge with one apiece.
The Beacons scored less than two minutes into the third quarter to bring the Spartans' scoring run to an end, but Castleton would not be silent for long as it posted three unanswered to lead 14-6 heading into the final stanza.
UMB posted three goals to bring itself within five, 14-9. With her fifth goal of the contest, Cota made it 15-9 in favor of the Spartans. The hosts put up two goals to bring it within four, while Castleton answered with a score by Paul, assisted by Geraci, to make it 16-11. The Beacons went down swinging, scoring the last contest with one second remaining on the clock to secure a 16-12 Spartan victory.
Top Performers
- Paul was the leader of the pack with a balanced six points on three goals and three assists.
- Cota and Geraci collected five points apiece, the first with five goals, the latter with three goals and two assists.
- Tallmadge finished with two goals, while Loomis, Ward and Gale ended with one.
- In the crease, Katie Stager made 12 saves to lock down her fourth career victory.
