QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's alpine skiing program notched a first-place finish on Saturday and a third-place finish on Sunday at West Mountain for two days of giant slalom.
Saturday
Castleton took the top two spots, with Emilie Stene notching the top spot on day one, posting a time of 2:23.89 and setting a new program record. Stene becomes the all-time leader in career wins for women's alpine ski racers with 19, jumping ahead of Karoline Rettenbacher ('22) who previously held the record with 18. Rookie Andrea Rodriguez finished second with a time of 2:24.24. Karleigh Hollister finished ninth with a time of 2:34.00, Grace Porcaro finished 15th, and Gabriella Hall 20th to round out Castleton's finishers.
The Spartans posted a combined time of 7:22.13 to take home first, with Babson finishing second with a time of 7:35.77 and UConn third with a time of 7:42.38.
Sunday
On day two Rodriguez notched her third win of the season, marking her first in giant slalom with a time of 2:07.79. Stene posted a time of 2:08.93 to finish fourth, and Hollister with a time of 2:15.60, pacing 12th. Porcaro finished 21st, Ginevra Trevisan in 23rd, and Hall in 30th.
The Spartans finished in third with a combined time of 6:32.32, behind Clarkson in second with a time of 6:29.84, and Babson in first with a 6:28.69.
The women's program has no seniors this season but joined in celebrating their fellow men's teammates.
The Spartans head to Massachusetts for a weekend of slalom, at Berkshire East on Saturday, February 8, and Catamount on Sunday, February 9.
