PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jess Smithson of the Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team earned her first Little East Conference accolade of the season as she was named the Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 26.
The Spartans went 2-0 on the week, taking down Plymouth State 2-1 at home on Tuesday before downing UMass Dartmouth 4-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.

Smithson played roles on both ends of the field, as she recorded a goal and an assist in each of the squad's wins.

The senior now ranks third on the team offensively with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She leads the team defensively with 11 defensive saves.

Smithson and the Spartans will remain on the road as they look to close out their regular season LEC slate with a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Keene State on Tuesday evening.
