Spartans Rally For LEC Win Over Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team returned to the win column Tuesday evening, taking down Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University, 2-1, at Dave Wolk Stadium.

The Basics
• Final Score: VTSU Castleton 2, Plymouth State 1
• Location: Dave Wolk Stadium – Castleton, Vt.
• Records: Castleton 6-8 (2-2 LEC) | Plymouth State 5-8 (1-2 LEC)

How It Happened
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading possession. As time wound down, Castleton began to find its rhythm, collecting three penalty corners, two shots on goal, and one wide attempt in a 30-second stretch.

The second quarter tilted toward Plymouth State, as the Panthers generated three shots on goal off four penalty corners. Despite the pressure, neither team broke through, and the game remained scoreless after 30 minutes.

The second half opened with immediate action as Plymouth State struck first just 35 seconds in. Three minutes later, it looked as if Castleton had equalized when Jess Smithson fired a rocket into the back of the net off a Brooke Noble penalty corner, but the goal was waved off for a foot violation. The Panthers held their 1-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With just under 10 minutes left, the Spartans finally broke through as Noble connected with Smithson to tie the game at 1-1. A minute later, Smithson appeared to have her second of the game, but it was again waved off — this time for being too high in the circle.

In the 56th minute, Castleton secured the comeback victory when Smithson sent a hard shot on goal that was redirected by Geneive Pitts past the keeper for the decisive LEC win, 2-1.

By the Numbers
• Smithson led the offense with three points on one goal and one assist.
• Pitts' game-winning goal was her second of the season.
• In goal, Zoe Martin made four saves to earn her sixth win of the year.
• The Spartans outshot the Panthers 20-10, putting 15 shots on target.
