Men's Soccer Narrowly Falls to Beacons

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer narrowly dropped a Little East Conference match 2-1 to UMass Boston Saturday evening.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • The Beacons came out hot, putting the pressure on Castleton's back line and Xander Berthiaume, who made three saves through the first eight minutes.
  • In the 9th minute, UMass Boston found the back of the net, taking an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Beacons struck again in the 24th minute, putting the pressure on Castleton's back line, but the Spartans would not back down.
  • In the 27th minute, Michael O'Connor registered a hard shot on goal, but was stopped by the Beacons' keeper.
  • Castleton kicked up the tempo in the second half, forcing UMass Boston to work to get the ball back.
  • The Spartans' back line stayed strong as the second half began, registering a blocked shot before Castleton was able to get on the board.
  • Matt Spiller found success on a free kick in the 66th minute, cutting the Beacons' lead in half as time continued to wind down.
  • The Beacons continued to test Castleton through the final 20 minutes of play, as Berthiaume and his back line worked to make saves and block more shots, but it was not enough as UMass Boston took the 2-1 win.
