CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton athletic department is proud to announce its Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2024, comprised of four individuals who will be inducted on Friday, September 20, at the Castleton Pavilion.
The class features former president Dave Wolk, a visionary leader who oversaw significant investment in athletics and the student experience at Castleton; Tyler Carpenter '14 (football); Alyssa Leonard '14 (women's basketball); and Rachel Brousseau (Preusser) '13 (field hockey).
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Castleton Pavilion, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres served and a cash-only bar available. Doors open at 4:15 p.m. The cost of admission is $25 per person, and can be purchased online at
VermontState.edu/HOF24. All tickets must be purchased by Friday, September 6. The inductees will also be recognized on Saturday, September 21, at halftime of the Castleton football game against Mass. Maritime.
Wolk took over as the president of Castleton in 2001, and through tireless efforts more than doubled the institution's athletic offerings during his tenure. In 2009 Wolk ushered in the Castleton Student Initiative, a $25.7 million project which reinvigorated student life and learning and changed the face of campus, bringing with it the addition of a football program and Spartan Stadium—now named in his honor as Dave Wolk Stadium. Wolk's investment in athletics paid massive dividends, increasing athletic participation rates five-fold and pushing the total offerings to 28 varsity programs at the time of his retirement.
Carpenter is set to be the first football player inducted into the Hall of Fame, a fitting honor for the man who scored the first touchdown in program history and still stands as the team's all-time leader in touchdowns. He finished his time as a Spartan with 58 total touchdowns with 50 of those coming on the ground. A three-time All-ECFC selection, he ran for 2,781 yards and totaled 4,134 all-purpose yards during his time with the program.
Leonard was instrumental to the women's basketball program's success in the 2010s, finishing her career on a high note with the team's trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 while earning NAC Player of the Year and All-Region honors individually. She led the team in scoring as a senior at 13.4 points per game and graduated as the program's fourth-leading scorer all-time with 1,375 points. A well-rounded player, she also ranks top five in assists, free throws made and games played while ranking in the top 10 for rebounds.
Brousseau (Preusser) rewrote the Spartan field hockey record books during her time on the turf, amassing 219 points on 86 goals and 47 assists. She graduated as the program's all-time leader in all three scoring categories, and remains as the team's all-time assist leader to this day. She holds three of the 10 highest-scoring seasons in program history, registering a career-high and then-program-record 79 points in 2013 when she had 26 goals and a nation-leading 27 assists in a single season. She earned NFHCA Second Team All-America honors as a senior and was named NAC Player of the Year twice while earning All-Region honors on three occasions.
