Wolves Outpace Women's Lacrosse

DANBURY, Conn. – The Vermont State University women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-6 loss at the hands of WestConn on Saturday afternoon on the road.
 
Renny Cota and Megan Ward scored two goals apiece for the Spartans and Gianna Geraci and Phoebe Loomis had one score each. Geraci also had an assist and grabbed a team-leading four ground balls with four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Ward had three ground balls and three draw controls. Tien Connor made her first appearance between the pipes, stopping 10 shots in the contest.
 
The Spartans cleared the ball well as a team, going 18-of-22 on the clear and were nearly even in ground balls, 18-16. The Spartans also went 3-for-4 on free-position attempts while the Wolves were held to 2-for-5. WestConn won the draw control battle 20-8.
 
Madison Ratchford's five goals led all players followed by four from Faye Jung and three from Alexia Riggio. Isabella Pota snagged seven draw controls and Molly Bresnahan made seven saves in goal.
 
WestConn scored the first four goals of the game before Cota's 11th goal of the season got the Spartans on the board. Geraci netted the second of the day for the Spartans to cut it back to 6-2, but the Wolves tacked on a 5-0 run to lead 11-2 early in the second. Ward netted her first of the day to make it 11-3, but WestConn pushed to hit running time before the break with a 15-3 edge at halftime.
 
The lead grew to 19-3 before the Spartans rattled off three unanswered goals from the sticks of Loomis, Cota and Ward over a 10-minute span in the fourth quarter. WestConn netted the last goal late in the game for the 20-6 final.
 
VTSU Castleton is back in action Wednesday night at 4 p.m. at Plymouth State.
