Stene Wins Twice; Women’s Alpine Goes Unbeaten at West Mountain

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's alpine skiing team was perfect in a three-race weekend at the program's home carnival, finishing the trip to West Mountain with two giant slalom triumphs on Sunday.

Saturday
Emilie Stene led the pack in the opening race with her 2:20.42 dash, boasting a victory margin of 1.63 seconds. Karleigh Hollister clocked in at 2:23.72 to garner fourth place as Ginevra Trevisan contributed to the team time in 10th, finishing in 2:27.88.

Camille Jackson finished in the top half of the field thanks to a 2:31.47 combined time which landed her in 23rd. Right behind the Australian senior was Amanda Quiles who ripped down the slope in 2:31.75 after logging the event's eighth-fastest second run. Ines Robres Peireto followed in 26th while Mia DiOrio took home 39th. Petra Veljkovic made her first appearance of the season and came in third on the race's initial run.

The Spartans ended the day on top, prevailing over Babson with their 7:12.02 total time compared to the Beavers' 7:13.92 mark. UConn (7:24.23) and Clarkson (7:24.74) followed the green and white programs in third and fourth place, respectively.

Sunday (Race 1)
Stene navigated the high-tempo course in 2:10.17 for the fifth consecutive race victory of her sophomore campaign, going 5-for-5 in the GS discipline. Taking runner-up was Hollister as the Old Forge, N.Y. native posted a time of 2:12.10.

Trevisan finished in 2:13.74 to secure the sixth spot as Jackson (24th) and Robres Peireto (25th) placed inside the top 25.

VTSU Castleton compiled a team time of 6:36.01 to finish ahead of Babson (6:40.97) and Clarkson (6:44.50).

Sunday (Race 2)
Due to the second race at Berkshire East being canceled, the carnival was concluded with a one-run giant slalom competition.

The top three positions in the dash were separated by just 0.19 seconds as Stene's 1:05.02 run notched second place. Hollister picked up another podium, taking third with a time of 1:05.21. Trevisan stacked up sixth once again as she got to the finish corral in 1:07.21.

Jackson (20th), Robres Peireto (24th), and Quiles (28th) rounded out the Spartan lineup with impressive afternoons.

Castleton tacked on its third win in two days with a 3:17.50 combined time, claiming first place by a 5.16-second margin. Babson (3:22.66) claimed the runner-up spot while UMass (3:23.35) completed the podium in third.

In a Senior Day sendoff, Jackson and Veljkovic were recognized by their teammates and supporters for their unwavering commitment to the program over the past four seasons.

The Spartans' next race is a slalom on Saturday, February 10 at Pats Peak.
