CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Petra Veljkovic and Emilie Stene swiped the top two positions in Saturday's giant slalom at Sugarloaf, propelling the Vermont State University Castleton women's alpine skiing team to claim the USCSA Eastern Regional title.
Veljkovic posted the third-quickest second run for a total time of 1:49.22 to collect her second collegiate victory. Stene followed closely in the runner-up slot, flying down Narrow Gauge in 1:49.47.
After a 20th-best first run, Ginevra Trevisan laid down the third-quickest second pass to snag ninth at 1:54.23. Karleigh Hollister also completed the course in under two minutes to finish 16th. Rounding out the Spartans' competitors was Amanda Quiles in 41st place.
VTSU Castleton amassed a combined time of 5:32.92, beating out fellow MacConnell Division foes Babson (5:41.84) and UMass (5:43.02) to become USCSA Eastern Regional champions.
The Spartans return to the slopes at Sugarloaf tomorrow (February 18) for the weekend's slalom event.
