GORHAM, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team finished second at the Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine Saturday evening, with 17 place-winners, three of which were first-place and 148 team points.
Coast Guard took home first with 175 team points, while the host squad of Southern Maine earned 105 points. WPI finished fourth with 91 and American International rounded out the top five with 69.5 team points.
The Spartans second-place finish is highlighted by three first-place winners,
Gavin Bradley at 125 pounds,
Connor Gregory at 165 pounds, and
Evan Day at 285 pounds. Bradley (125), Gregory (165), and Day (285) all finished the day with perfect records, with Bradley going 3-0 and Gregory and Day going 4-0.
Abbas Abdulrahman was Castleton's lone second-place finisher at 285 pounds.
Kaya Bogle took home third-place at 133 pounds earning his 100th career win today.
Tylik Epps finished third at 141 pounds, as did
Nicolas Balella at 149 pounds, and
Blake Chapman at 174 pounds. Abdulrahman (285) and Bogle (133) finished with a 3-1 record. Balella (149) and Chapman (174) went 4-1 on the day, with Epps (141) finishing with a 5-1 record.
Ryan VanGuilder (125),
Jashon Holmes (165), and
Corbin Maraia (184) took home fourth-place finishes, with
Syrus Colon (174) and
Alaq Dowd-Grant (285) taking home fifth.
Stone Farnsworth (141),
Justyce Mercado (149),
Jacob Caricato (157), and
Caleb Rojas (165) finished sixth in their respective weight classes.
The Spartans are back at split-squad action next weekend. They will compete at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Illinois, and the Scott Viera Tournament in Bristol, Rhode Island, both beginning at 9 a.m.
