CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Castleton women's rugby team defeated Colby-Sawyer on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, to mark their third consecutive season with a season-opening victory.

Veteran Aubrey Tetlow got the Spartans on the board with a sprint to the outside that found paydirt just two minutes in. Hannah Coupas stacked another try as the Northville, N.Y. native capitalized on a pass off a victorious scrum. A successful conversion by Nat Simecek gave Castleton a 12-0 lead midway through the opening game's first half. After a Colby-Sawyer try put the game within one possession, Madi Aronson found a barreling Coupas for a late score. Another Simecek conversion created a 14-point margin which the Spartans held onto for the game-one win.

Coupas began the second contest with an immediate try, scoring in 18 seconds and making her own conversion for a 7-0 Spartan lead. The Spartans and Chargers engaged in a scrum near the goal line, resulting in Simecek coming up with the ball and powering in for her first try of the day. Tetlow carried the energy into the second half as the senior broke away from the Colby-Sawyer defense to generate a three-possession game at 17-0. The Chargers won a breakaway of their own for a try soon afterward, but the Spartans hung on for the victory in game two, 17-5.

Coupas and Tovah Coe logged tries in the third game, as well as Pamela McCullough who scored in a Colby-Sawyer jersey after some members of the Spartan squad agreed to assist a seven-player Charger roster. Colby-Sawyer won the final contest, 12-10, thanks to a late, forceful drive from Celina Dao.

The Spartans carry their 1-0 record to Norwich on Saturday, September 17. Kickoff from Northfield, Vt. is set for 11:00 a.m.
