RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton University men's golf team finished second place in an eight-team field at its home event on Sunday, wrapping the two-day Castleton Invitational with a team score of 633.
The Spartans placed narrowly behind the University of Southern Maine, which shot 625 as a team. Castleton shot 314 on Sunday—a five-shot improvement over Saturday's score—but the Huskies posted the low round of the day at 305, shaving 15 strokes off their first-day total. NVU-Johnson finished third with a score of 646, while Gordon was fourth at 647. New England College (650), Elms College (652), Norwich (677) and MCLA (926) rounded out the teams in the field.
Nick Ojala earned medalist honors at the event, leading wire-to-wire with a two-day score of 150. He shot a 72 Saturday and a 78 Sunday.
Brady Hathorn carded a top-10 finish thanks to a second-day score of 76. The first-year Spartan totaled 157 to finish ninth overall.
Andrew Stefura tied for 10th place after posting scores of 81-79—160, the best two-day score of his career.
Matt Redmond finished 19th overall after carding an 81 on Sunday, a four-shot improvement for the junior. His two day total was 166.
Brandon Picard rounded out the lineup with scores of 86-86—172.
NVU-Johnson's Garrett Stevens, USM's John Welch and NEC's Timothy Carlson finished in a three-way tie for second place at 151, while Elms' Mike Keefe and USM's Brogan Kane finished tied for fifth at 152.
Castleton is back in action next Sunday with the Southern Maine Fall Classic at Riverside Golf Course.
