NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The Castleton women's rugby team played their first 15s contest of the year at Norwich on Saturday, falling to the Cadets, 34-13.
Natalie Simecek executed a field goal for three points, while
Katelynn Dunn and
Aubrey Tetlow each recorded a try.
With the Cadets ahead 19-3 after Simecek's kick, the Spartans marched down the field and settled into scoring territory. Tetlow received a pass out of a ruck that the senior fly-half tossed toward Dunn who dashed and weaved her way into the try zone for five points. Norwich tacked on two tries just before halftime to make it 29-8 at the break. Seven minutes into the second half, Castleton pushed forward out of a scrum which spurred drives from
Pamela McCullough and
Ginny House. Just a few yards out from paydirt, Tetlow took the rock and scampered, lunging forward and fully extending the ball across the line for a try. The Cadets returned with a try of their own to make it 34-13 with the score made final midway through the second half due to player safety.
The Spartans are back in action at home on Sunday, September 25 to challenge Bowdoin. Kickoff is slated for noon in Castleton.
