LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team persevered on its way to a fourth-place finish in the giant slalom at the 2022 USCSA National Championships Tuesday at Whiteface Mountain.

The Spartans had a pair of racers ski out in the first run, putting the pressure on the remaining three racers to complete a successful second run for the team scoring at the event. Lena Soehnle, Karoline Rettenbacher and Ashley LaCross came through, combining for a team time of 6:50.81, just behind third-place Babson College.

Soehnle was Castleton's top finisher, finishing fifth overall with a combined time of 2:11.67. She was in seventh place after a 1:04.46 in run one, but she posted the fourth-fastest second run to move up two spots on the leaderboard. She clocked in at 1:07.21 in the second run. Rettenbacher was second for the Spartans and 11th overall, posting a time of 2:14.09. She finished in 1:06.47 in the first run, and clocked in with the eighth-best second run at 1:07.62. LaCross rounded out the finishers for Castleton, clocking in at 2:25.45 after runs of 1:11.63 and 1:13.42.

Soehnle earned First Team All-America honors for her top-five finish, while Rettenbacher was named to the Second Team All-America for finishing inside the top-15. Soehnle collected the third All-America accolade of her career, while Rettenbacher tallied the seventh All-America honor in her time at Castleton.

The Spartan women are back on the slopes for the slalom on Thursday at Whiteface.
