QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team dominated the slopes on one of its home mountains on Saturday, finishing first as a team in slalom action at West Mountain while claiming the top five spots on the leaderboard.
Along with having all five of the top-five finishers in the race, the Spartans placed seven total racers in the top-15. Castleton's team time of 5:34.76 was nearly 20 seconds faster than second-place Babson's time of 5:54.36. UMass Amherst finished third with a time of 6:04.12.
Tatiana Tobolka eviscerated the field, claiming the top spot on the podium by nearly three full seconds. Her time of 1:49.29 led all racers, as she posted the fastest run in each heat: 49.71 seconds and 59.58 seconds, respectively.
Petra Veljkovic was second with a time of 1:52.14 after clocking in with runs of 51.38 and 1:00.76, while
Karoline Rettenbacher was third at 1:53.33. Rettenbacher laid down times of 51.33 and 1:02.00 on the day.
Lena Soehnle checked in fourth overall with a time of 1:53.35, finishing just two one-hundredths of a second behind Rettenbacher, moving up six places from her first-run position after posted the third-fastest second run of the day. She clocked times of 53.44 and 1:01.91.
Deena Jacunski was fifth overall with a time of 1:56.21, posting times of 53.35 and 1:02.86 on the day.
Matilda Gutke sat in 24th position after an opening-run time of 57.28, but rebounded with a second-run time of 1:02.24—the fifth-fastest time in the heat—for a combined total of 1:59.52 and a 12th-place result. Ashley LaCross finished 15th with a time of 2:00.20, posting times of 55.33 and 1:04.87.
Castleton is back in action for another slalom race Sunday at West Mountain at 10 a.m.
