Women's Alpine Wins GS, Overall Titles at USCSA Regionals

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team topped the podium once again on Sunday, earning both the giant slalom and overall titles at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at Sugarloaf.
 
The Spartans, who won the slalom title on Saturday, followed up with yet another victory in giant slalom with a time of 5:16.50, topped the 15-team field in the overall standings as well. Babson finished second in the GS and overall, posting a time of 5:26.06 on Sunday.
 
Babson's Lauren Abdow won the GS and overall regional championship individually, but the Spartans claimed the second-place, third-place and fourth-place finishers consecutively in the GS to earn the victory as a squad. Lena Soehnle was Castleton's top finisher at 1:44.46, posting times of 50.64 and 53.82. Petra Veljkovic was third overall at 1:45.77 after runs of 52.07 and 53.70. Karoline Rettenbacher finished with times of 52.00 and 54.27 for a fourth-place time of 1:46.27.
 
Rettenbacher, Veljkovic and Soehnle finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the overall standings.
 
The Spartans have now qualified for the USCSA National Championships at Whiteface, where they will look to defend their Slalom title from 2020. Races at the National Championships take place March 8-12.
 
Before the USCSA National Championships, the Spartans will compete at the NCAA Regional Championships at Cannon Mountain on Friday and Saturday.
