QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team kept its impressive season rolling Saturday afternoon, claiming a comeback victory in giant slalom action at West Mountain.
After trailing by nearly two seconds as a team after the first run, the Spartans put together an impressive second run as a team to leapfrog Babson and take the top spot on the podium. Castleton finished the day with a team time of 5:49.55, besting the Beavers (5:52.66) by three full seconds. UConn was third at 6:02.87, with Clarkson right behind at 6:05.69.
Petra Veljkovic was Castleton's top finisher, posting a time of 1:56.30 for a second-overall result. Veljkovic was in 11th place after the day's opening run (58.34), but laid down the fastest time in the second run (57.96) to move all the way into second.
Tatiana Tobolka finished third with a time of 1:56.37, posting runs of 57.68 and 58.69.
Karoline Rettenbacher was fourth at 1:56.88 after runs of 57.75 and 59.13, followed by
Lena Soehnle in fifth at 1:57.58. Soehnle logged a first-run time of 57.83 and a second-run time of 59.75.
Deena Jacunski finished eighth on the day (1:58.58), moving up five spots from 13th place after the day's opening run. Her second-run time was sixth-fastest as she climbed the leaderboard.
Alexis Hollister also made a big move up the leaderboard, going from 28th to 13th after the fifth-best second run of the day. Hollister finished at 2:01.07.
Ashley LaCross went from 26th place to 14th-place after the day's ninth-best second run, posting a time of 2:01.30 combined.
Grace Weisiger (2:03.39) was 24th and
Matilda Gutke (2:13.00) was 29th.
Castleton wraps up the regular season Sunday at West Mountain with another giant slalom race.
