CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University wrestling program hosted a trio of other teams on Saturday, wrestling a number of individual exhibitions while the Spartans' JV grouping bested WPI's varsity lineup 34-9 in a dual match.
A dozen different Spartans picked up a pair of wins on the day, with 10 of those wrestlers going 2-0.
The dual began on a high not for Castleton with
Gavin Bradley earning a 5-2 win via decision before
Drew Marchese posted a dominating technical fall, 21-6, to extend the lead to 8-0 in the match. After a loss at 141,
Elijah Cyr picked the Spartans up with a second-period pin at the 3:32 mark.
Logan Dubuque followed with Castleton's second tech fall of the match, 18-2, giving the Spartans a 19-3 edge.
Izaiah Otero won a 5-0 decision to extend the lead to 22-3 before
Desmond McLaughlin and
Josh Negron added decision wins of their own at 174 and 184 for a 28-3 lead in the contest. A loss via fall at 197 pushed WPI's total to nine points, but
Abbas Abdulrahman responded with his own pin at 3:46 to cap the match with Castleton on top 34-9.
Bradley, Marchese, Cyr, Dubuque, McLaughlin and Abdulrahman were six of the Spartans with two victories on the day, while
Graham Blood,
Ayden Robles,
Kaden Gransbury,
Darius Mangiafico,
Caleb Rojas and
Lou Padilla were the others.
Castleton is back in action next Saturday at 10 a.m. at the University of Southern Maine's Ted Reese Invitational.
