PORTLAND, Maine – The Castleton University men's golf team sits in third place after the first day of competition at the Southern Maine Fall Classic being played at Riverside Golf Course.
The Spartans shot a team total of 313 at the 6,162-yard, par-72 track on Sunday. Nichols College is the first-round leader at 308, with host Southern Maine in second at 312. St. Joseph's (ME) and Rhode Island College are just behind Castleton tied at 317.
Nick Ojala leads all competitors in the 34-player field, carding a one-over 73 to open the day. He opened the front nine with a one-under 35 before shooting 38 on the back.
Brady Hathorn and
Brandon Picard each shot 79, carding identical nine-hole stretches with 40s on the front and 39s on the back.
Andrew Stefura posted an 82, while
A.J. Tatton rounded out the lineup with an 86 for Castleton.
The tournament wraps up on Monday.
