HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Castleton women's rugby team put on an impressive showing at the NEC Jamboree, taking down the host Pilgrims, Colby-Sawyer, and Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans outscored their opposition 69-10 across the trio of 7's contests.
Castleton 15, New England College 5
Sophomore back
Katelynn Dunn put the Spartans on the board in the game's first 30 minutes with a try, making it 5-0. The Pilgrims' Ari Hamilton struck minutes later, tying it at 5-all.
Kiki Valentino would push Castleton in front 95 seconds into the final half. Dunn found paydirt with 3:22 to go, adding insurance for the Spartans and securing the 15-5 victory.
Castleton 32, Colby-Sawyer 0
After winning two of three games against the Chargers in the season opener, the Spartans shut out Colby-Sawyer on neutral ground. Dunn scored immediately following kickoff as
Natalie Simecek drilled the conversion kick, giving Castleton a quick 7-0 lead. Simecek would find the try zone herself soon after, extending the gap to 12-nil. As time expired in the opening half,
Aubrey Tetlow stacked a try to make it 17-0, Spartans at the break. Not satisfied with the three-possession lead,
Ginny House added a try 45 minutes after halftime. Tetlow returned to the scoresheet with three minutes remaining as her try extended the advantage to 27-0. Freshman back
Gretel Seaman capped scoring with her first career try as the clock hit triple-zeros, closing out the Spartans' second win.
Castleton 22, Manhattanville 5
Dunn and Simecek led off the Spartans' final game just as they did against Colby-Sawyer, adding a try and conversion in the opening moments to lead 7-0. Junior prop Valentino pushed through for her second and Castleton's 11th try of the day, stretching the margin to 12. Manhattanville responded late in the first half as the Valiants' Tomoka Asakuma tacked on a try, making it 12-5 Spartans after the opening seven minutes. The swift Dunn pounced for her fifth score of the day with 5:46 to go, then Williamstown, Mass. native Tetlow's try with two minutes left made it a three-score gap that the Valiants would not recover from.
The Spartans are back home for their final match within friendly confines on Sunday, October 9 against Manhattanville. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
