CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University Associate Dean for Athletics and Recreation
Deanna Tyson announced the hiring of
Emily Lowell '18 as the field hockey program's next head coach.
"We're excited to welcome Emily back to Castleton, this time in a coaching role," said Tyson. "Her passion for Castleton and its student-athletes shines through and will be a welcome addition to our staff."
A native of Brandon, Vt., Lowell takes the reins of the program after a decorated playing career for the Spartans turned into a coaching opportunity at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Lowell spent two seasons as a graduate assistant with the NCAA Division II Chargers, conducting practices, recruiting, and managing other areas of the fledgling New Haven program. Following an inaugural 2017 season that saw the Chargers go winless, Lowell joined the staff for the 2018 campaign and helped the program win two games in its second year and five games in its third.
Lowell was a standout on the field for Castleton from 2015 to 2017, leading Castleton in scoring during her junior and senior seasons. She parlayed a 38-point senior season into North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-NAC and Longstreth/NFHCA All-New England East Region honors.
"I want to thank Deanna for giving me the opportunity to come back to Castleton, and for all of the guidance she has already given me," said Lowell. "Castleton gave me so many memories as a student-athlete, and I always wanted to return to the University in a coaching capacity because this program means so much to me."
"My ultimate goal in this role is to create a strong and positive experience for all of my players," she continued. "I see a lot of potential in the student-athletes on the team this year and we're all excited to come out and make an impact once again in the Little East."
Lowell holds a bachelor of science degree from Castleton in sports administration and a master of business administration degree from the University of New Haven.
