ITHACA, N.Y. – The Castleton University wrestling team sits in third place as a team after the opening day of competition at the Ithaca Invitational, trailing only Stevens Tech and Johnson & Wales.
The Spartans have 27 of 31 entrants remaining in competition, with only four wrestlers eliminated on day one. Of those 27, 10 remain in the championship side of their brackets, while 17 try to work their way back through the consolation rounds in a fight for third place.
Michael Gonyea,
Elijah Cyr,
Nicholas Roeger,
Logan Dubuque,
Cooper Fleming,
Sampson Wilkins and
Shea Garand all went 2-0 on Friday, while
Michael Angers,
Alec Richards and
Chance LaPier posted 1-0 records.
Fleming posted a pair of wins via pin, first in 4:36 and next in 3:25. Gonyea's second win came via pin in 3:21, and Cyr's first victory came by way of the fall at 2:48. Wilkins' second victory was via fall at 1:34 and LaPier's only bout of the day ended in a win via pin at 2:43.
Darius Mangiafico stayed alive after dropping his first bout by pinning his next opponent in the third period, while
Nikko Walsh did so in the second period in his second bout of the day.
Jacob Caricato staved off elimination with a win via fall in his first consolation bout of the day, ending the match at the 1:31 mark.
