Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Castleton softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon, taking both ends of a twin bill from Skidmore behind the power of 22 combined runs at the Wagner Park Softball Field.
Castleton (6-2) was victorious in game one by a final of 13-5, before cruising to a game-two win, 9-1. Skidmore falls to 6-12 after the losses. The Spartans racked up an impressive 32 hits over the two games, tallying 15 in game one and 17 in game two.
Taylor Paquette went the distance in second game of the day, allowing just one unearned run on five hits and two walks. She struck out four in her fourth win of the season. Karli Theberge had a stellar day, going 6-for-9 over the two games. Sara Baker was another key bat for Castleton, blasting her first career home run as part of a five-hit day for the rookie. Baker also drove in five runs on the day, while Timi Carone, Sami Carlo and Tori Swaine had three RBIs apiece.
Emily Popp led the way for Skidmore, driving in two runs and adding three hits between the two games. She also tossed a complete game in game two, suffering the loss. Amanda Carilli went the distance in game one for Skidmore, allowing 13 runs, six earned, on 15 hits. Lauren Fortunato was 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI as well.
Kayla Wood was victorious in game one for Castleton, tossing a complete game and allowing five runs while striking out six. Theberge had four hits in the first game, while Baker's home run ensured the Spartans didn't trail for the remainder of the game. Both Baker and Carone had three RBIs in the first contest of the day.
After three scoreless innings to open the game, the Spartans' bats came alive to the tune of two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jordan Gouger knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to open the scoring, before an RBI base hit by McKinlie Carpenter made it 2-0.
Skidmore answered in the bottom of the inning, putting up three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Popp started the scoring for the Thoroughbreds with a run-scoring single before two more doubles scored a pair of runs.
The Spartan bats stayed hot in the fifth inning, as Baker knocked a two-run home run to deep left center field to give Castleton the lead again, 4-3. The Thoroughbreds drew even once more in the bottom of the inning, 4-4, as Popp tallied another RBI, but Castleton began to pull away in the sixth.
Entering the inning tied at 4-4, Castleton posted three runs to push its lead to 7-4. Carlo notched a two-run single to make it 6-4, before Carone followed up with an RBI fielder's choice to score the third run.
The Spartans the put the game out of reach in the seventh inning, racking up six runs while bringing 11 batters to the plate. The Spartans were helped by a multitude of Skidmore errors, but Carone knocked a big two-out double to help push the score to 13-4.
Skidmore got one run back in the last half of the seventh, but it was not enough as Wood shut down the Thoroughbred bats to end the game, 13-5.
Game two was more of the same, as Castleton jumped out to a quick lead with a run in the first inning. Swaine tallied an RBI single to give Castleton the first run of the game, before coming back with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the top of the third inning.
Paquette remained on cruise control through three innings, giving the Spartans another chance for a run in the fourth.
Carlo came up with runners on second and third and drove in a run with a ground ball in the top of the fourth to push it to 3-0, before Castleton broke it open in the fifth inning. The Spartans tacked on two more runs to go up 5-0, as Baker and Paquette each tallied RBI singles.
Castleton added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, with Swaine and Emilee Teague driving in runs for the Spartans to push the advantage to 7-0. Skidmore came back with its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Fortunato reached on an error and came around to score on a base hit later in the inning.
Castleton capped its offensive outburst with a two-run seventh inning, giving the team runs in six of seven innings and one or more runs in each of the last five frames. Theberge made it an 8-1 game with a sacrifice fly, before Baker notched a run-scoring single to put the game at its final score, 9-1. Paquette worked a quick bottom half of the inning to seal the victory.
Castleton is slated to face Middlebury at Spartan Field on Wednesday. Game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
