Box Score CASTLETON Vt. – Each of the Spartans' first nine goals were scored by a different person, as their depth and balance were too much for Maine Maritime Academy in Saturday afternoon's 22-6 victory at Spartan Stadium.
In all, 15 different Castleton players scored a goal while outshooting the Mariners 61-19 in the contest and grabbing 23 more ground balls (53-30), to improve to 8-5 and 5-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. Castleton also caused 16 turnovers and won 19 of 31 faceoffs. MMA caused 12 turnovers but dropped to 3-7 and 3-1 in the NAC.
Freshman Tom Pardew scored a team-high three goals with one assist and three ground balls while Louis Alhage added four assists, one goal and five ground balls. Wyatt Pickrell chipped in two goals and one assist while Joshua Cody led the team with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Joshua Gosselin won 9 of 15 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls.
For the Mariners, Dean Samuelson had a hand in four goals with three scores and one assist. Michael Dedian added three caused turnovers and five ground balls while Alec Grant had six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Pardew gave Castleton a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the contest and Sam Frackleton made 2-0 at 10:34. Zach Devoid and Kyle Lutinski extended the lead to 4-0 and then Nik Rancourt and Gosselin scored just seven seconds apart for the 6-0 advantage with 6:02 left. Jason Sedell and Taylor Swarter added goals in the period for an 8-0 lead after the first quarter.
Connor Kelly opened the scoring in the second quarter and Devoid registered his second goal before Maine Maritime got on the board with 6:41 left on a goal by Chase Whittemore. Castleton added four goals in the final three minutes, with two from Pardew and one apiece by Swarter and Kelly for a 14-1 halftime edge.
Maritime kept Castleton off the board for the first seven minutes of the third, before Sam Siegel's first of the afternoon made it a 14-goal game. Samuelson broke up the run with his first goal, but Matt Levins, Ryan Stone and Drew Wood strectched the Spartan lead to 18-2 through three quarters.
Each team scored four times in the fourth as Castleton subbed liberally on its way to the 16-goal victory.
Peter Latulippe played the first half in net, making one save with one goal allowed to secure the win. Romello Lindsey played the third quarter and allowed one goal, while Brandon Myron gave up four goals, but did make four saves.
The Mariners' Cody Schell stopped 19 shots while allowing 22 goals as he took the loss in net.
The Spartans return to action when they travel to face 2015 NAC runner-up New England College on Wednesday at 7 pm
