Box Score BANGOR, Maine – The Castleton women's soccer team held a lead at the half, but it was not enough as the Spartans played to a 2-2 draw in double overtime against Husson in a North Atlantic Conference matchup at Boucher Field.
Both sides are now 5-1-2 in NAC play, while Castleton moves to 7-6-4 overall and Husson sits at 6-7-2 overall.
Shelby McLenithan and Izzy Hutnak tallied goals for the Spartans in the contest, while Jessica Binkowski stopped three shots in the contest. McLenithan had four shots on goal in the game, and Bronwen Hopwood put two shots on target to no avail.
The Spartans got the scoring going early in the contest, netting back-to-back goals within a three-minute span. McLenithan opened the scoring in the contest in the 20th minute, tallying an unassisted goal to push her team out to a 1-0 advantage. Hutnak then doubled Castleton's lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute on an unassisted goal of her own. With time winding down in the opening half, the Eagles cut into the Castleton lead when Taylor Fortin found the back of the net to make it 2-1 in the 44th minute.
Both sides played scoreless soccer for a majority of the second frame, but the Husson offense applied enough pressure to crack the Castleton defense for a second time. Mollie Roy collected a goal in the 83rd minute to knot the game at 2-2 and send it to overtime for the second time in as many contests between the two sides at Boucher Field.
Neither team registered a shot in the first overtime period, sending it to a second extra frame. In the second overtime, both teams recorded one shot with no success in breaking the tie, as the 2-2 result held through the final whistle.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Maine Maritime for another NAC contest at noon.
