Big First Half Lifts Spartans to Victory, 6-1

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team picked up its fourth consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, using five first-half goals to cruise to a 6-1 victory on the road at Johnson St. in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.

The win puts the Spartans at 5-1-1 in conference play and above .500 overall for the first time this season at 7-6-3. Johnson St. falls to 1-7 in conference play and 1-12 overall with the defeat.

Makenzi Bellando had her third multi-goal game of the season, netting two goals in the first half of action to go along with an assist. Three other Spartans recorded goals in the contest, including Kiley Baran with a pair of goals. Jessica Binkowski made two saves in 45 minutes of play for Castleton.

The Badgers' Kylie Aither scored the only goal of the game for her squad, and Danielle Schreiner stopped 17 shots in goal.

Castleton opened the scoring in just the second minute, when Bellando scored unassisted to give the Spartans a 1-0 edge. In the 18th minute, the Spartans pushed the lead to two goals when Bronwen Hopwood finished a goal on an assist from Bellando. Bellando was back at it in the 21st minute, scoring her second goal of the game to make it a 3-0 cushion. The Spartans kept pouring on the offense, as Baran tallied goals in the 31st and 37th minutes to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead. With time winding down in the half, the Johnson offense picked up its pressure as Aither scored unassisted in the 41st minute to make it 5-1 going into the break.

The Spartans toned it down in the second half, as Shelby McLenithan scored the only goal of the frame while the team attempted just 11 of its 32 shots in the final half.

Each stat was in favor of Castleton, as the Spartans held a 32-6 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans continue a four-game road stretch on Saturday as they travel to Husson for a NAC match at noon.
