FARMINGTON, Maine – Sophomore Kayla Wood tossed a complete-game shutout as Castleton opened the day with a 11-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington, but the Beavers came back with a 1-0 win in game two to earn the split on Saturday.

Wood was dominant on Saturday as she gave up just a single hit while striking out nine batters en route to her 11th win of the year. Katie Gagne led the offense with three hits and a pair of home runs. In the second game, Chelsea Grady singled and walked to pace the offense while Cassidy Tedeschi went 4.0 innings while giving up three hits and no earned runs.

With the split, Castleton moves to 17-10 and 8-2 in North Atlantic Conference action. UMF improves to 5-19 and 2-8 in conference play with the split.

The Spartans jumped on the Beavers in the top of the first with two runs. Gagne opened the scoring with an RBI single and two batters later Brittany Brayman scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the third, Gagne ripped a home run to center, scoring Brayman for the 4-0 advantage. An inning later Castleton pushed its lead to 6-0 on a 2-RBI double by Jessica Babcock.

Gagne led off the fifth with a solo home run and a few batters later Katie Traver plated Stephanie Sylvester and Ruby Bushey with a triple for the 9-0 lead. Kristi Lawless later drove in Timi Carone with a groundout and Babcock scored Kayla Daigle on a sacrifice fly to push it to 11-0.

Wood sent UMF down in order in the fifth to secure the contest.

In the second game of the day, Tedeschi kept the Beavers off the board through the first four innings. Castleton had a chance to score in the top of the fifth but Lawless and Babcock were stranded in scoring position.

Taylor Paquette entered in the fifth and gave up a leadoff single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second with one out and an RBI single gave the Beavers a 1-0 advantage.

Castleton threatened in the top of the sixth as the Spartans put runners on second and third with one out. Traver then was hit by a pitch to load the bases but Olivia Maher was thrown out at home by the third baseman on a fielder's choice for the second out. A lineout then ended the threat.

The Spartans had a runner on in the seventh but couldn't even the game as their six-game win streak was snapped.

Castleton concludes conference play on Tuesday when the team hosts Johnson St. in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
