Box Score GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – The Spartans trailed St. Lawrence just 6-3 midway through the second quarters but the Saints scored the final four goals of the half to put the game away and eventually finish with a 19-10 victory in the Adirondack Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.
Castleton was outshot 58-33 in the contest but did win 18 of the 32 faceoffs to drop to 0-1 on the season. St. Lawrence caused 12 turnovers and picked up 43 ground balls to open the year with a victory.
Tommy Hovey paced the Saints' attack with six goals, one assist and four ground balls while Conor Healy added two goals and three assists for five points. Jeremy Vautour added a hat trick as 11 different players scored in the game. Jack Roberts had two caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls while dishing off an assist.
For the Spartans, Zach Davidson led the team with three goals while Taylor Swarter chipped in with one goal and two assists. Freshman Sam Frackleton added one goal and a team-high six ground balls while Zach Devoid scored once and picked up five ground balls.
St. Lawrence scored the first three goals of the game before Davidson broke through with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. However, a shot from the midfield by Robby Dowers with no time left made it a 4-1 game after a quarter.
A 2-1 run by the Spartans cut the deficit to 6-3 with 8:32 left before half, but the Saints recorded the next four goals, including one eight seconds remaining for a 10-3 lead at the break.
St. Lawrence pushed its lead to 12-3 in the third before Louis Alhage scored on an unassisted goal at 11:44. Following another Saint goal, Mike Ruggiero and Nikolas Rancourt trimmed the deficit to 13-6 with 2:14 remaining. However, St. Lawrence responded with the next five goals to extend its lead to 18-6 with 11 minutes left. Castleton finished the game with four of the final five goals for the 19-10 final.
Junior Peter Latulippe was impressive in net for the Spartans, making 25 saves while allowing 19 goals but he did take the loss. Nick Ford earned the win for the Saints, making eight saves while giving up six goals in 45 minutes of action.
The Spartans return to action next Sat. when they play SUNY Canton at 3 pm.
