CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton's field hockey team dropped a tough, non-conference match Wednesday to Union by a 6-0 margin at Spartan Stadium.

The Dutchwomen outshot Castleton 23-9 to improve to 2-4 on the season. With the defeat, the Spartans are now 0-5. Sarah Medd led Union's attack with two goals, while Jessie Mulvey provided two assists in the victory.

Castleton's offense looked dangerous in the opening minutes. Sierra Galusha provided the first shot of the game just three minutes into action, forcing the Dutchwomen's keeper, Laura Aptowitz, into making a save.

However, Union countered, and in the 12th minute, the Dutchwomen were able to take the lead when Medd knocked in her first goal of the contest.

Just three minutes later, the away side was able to double its lead when Hannah Najar put the ball in the box, and Alexa Steriti knocked her effort into the back of the net.

Medd then grabbed her second goal of the contest in the 21st minute. Jessie Mulvey's pass found an open Medd in the box who finished the ball into the net to push the Dutchwomen's advantage to three.

In the 30th minute, Castleton had a scoring opportunity from a penalty corner. Haley Spittle took the penalty corner, passing the ball to Kristy Pinkham at the top of the arc. The senior dribbled in and delivered a hard shot, but a Union defender blocked it to deny the chance.

Just before halftime, the Dutchwomen scored their fourth goal of the first half. Alexa Steriti delivered Laura Pacheco the ball from a penalty corner. Pacheco then fired a shot that flew into the back of the net, handing Union a four-goal lead.

Sayyida Hasan gave the visitors a five-goal advantage in the 65th minute when she rebounded Jessie Mulvey's shot and buried it past the keeper for her first goal of the season.

Castleton senior Jess Galatioto (0-5) started in net for Castleton, picking up the loss with two saves in 21 minutes of action. Meeghan Doris came on in the first half, notching seven saves in 48 minutes of play.

Aptowitz picked up the win for Union, improving to 2-4 on the season, with one save and no goals allowed. Her backup, Danika Hornick, kept the clean sheet by making four saves in the second half.

The Spartans return to action this Saturday when they open conference play against Maine-Farmington at Spartan Stadium starting at 11 am.
