Box Score New Haven, Conn. - The Spartans saw their season come to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Wheaton Lyons 4-0 in the semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Albertus Magnus.
Castleton struggled to generate any offense, mustering only four shots. Wheaton owned possession throughout the game, and tallied 14 shots, nine of them on goal. Jessica Binkowski finished with five saves for the Spartans in the loss.
The Lyons notched a pair of first half goals to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Julie Beyar buried a rebound off a Binkowski save in the 18th minute to put the Lyons ahead, and Kaitlyn Montoya followed with a goal six minutes later to extend the Wheaton lead.
In the second half, Wheaton continued to pile onto the score. Castleton's only shot on goal came from Dominique Valancius in the second half, but was smothered by Wheaton goalkeeper Ali Hinton.
With their win, Wheaton will advance to the ECAC New England Championship to face Albertus Magnus, who knocked off top-seeded Roger Williams 2-1 earlier on Saturday. Castleton's season ends with a 13-9-2 record.
The Spartans' senior class leaves Castleton with quite a legacy. The class of 2014 was a part of three North Atlantic Conference Championships, made three NCAA Tournament appearances, and posted an overall record of 61-22-4.
