Box Score

Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans received their only two goals from freshmen in a 5-2 loss to Springfield College on Wednesday night at Spartan Stadium.

Freshmen Haley Spittle and Sarah Heffernan each netted goals in the loss. Jess Galatioto made five saves and took the loss before being pulled, while freshman Meeghan Doris made a pair of saves for the Spartans. Juliana Barrasso stopped 12 Spartan shots in net for the Pride.

The Pride were the first to score, tallying back-to-back goals in the 11th and 12th minutes to go up 2-0 early in the game. Linnea Quist netted Springfield's first goal, converting on a pass from Kelly Gallo. Taylor Friedman scored just 46 seconds later to put the Pride up by a pair of goals.

Castleton responded late in the first half when Haley Spittle netted a goal off a pass from Kristy Pinkham. The goal came with just over five minutes remaining in the half to cut the Springfield lead to 2-1.

After the half, Castleton started the period with an initial burst, outshooting the Pride 6-3 in the first few minutes. It was Springfield that struck first in the frame, however, as Kelly Gallo converted a penalty stroke to put the Pride up 3-1. Katie Gill and Olivia Cabral each added goals as the Pride extended their lead to 5-1.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Castleton let fly a flurry of shots, earning three penalty corners and several opportunities, but were denied by Barrasso on every chance. It wasn't until the 66th minute that Castleton cracked the Springfield goalkeeper in the second half.

On a breakaway, Blake Wardwell beat a defender and slid the ball across the goal mouth where Sarah Heffernan made a diving touch of the ball to finish it off for a goal. The score cut the Springfield lead to 5-2, but it was all the offense the Spartans could muster.

With the loss, Castleton fell to 6-5 on the season, but remain 4-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Spartans will travel to Simmons on Saturday, Oct. 12 in hopes to preserve their undefeated NAC record.
